Dieting is hard work and you will have to use every once of courage, willpower and resilience you have just to get through it. Any time we have a major change to get through it is especially important to pamper ourselves. Think of what it is that will soothe you when you are having an especially bad day. Many of us go to food for comfort and have been doing so all our lives. This is something that was conditioned in us since we were young. Mom would say, “Aww…you fell and hurt your knee? Here, have a cookie! This proverbial boo boo tends to come up a lot in life when things don’t go our way.
If you know anything about life, it should be that you can’t plan everything. We might spill our coffee, get into a traffic jam, get fired at work, come home to a tree that fell on the house, etc. To think that we can handle any one of these things without needing a little comfort is wrong. Sure, we need comfort, but it does not have to be food. Here are some ideas.
- Curl up in your favorite blanket
- Take a bubble bath
- Put on some easy listening music
- Do yoga
- Talk out your feelings with a good friend
- Get a mani/pedi
The bigger picture here is that the happier we are, the easier it is to lose weight. When is the last time you started a new house project when you were in a lousy mood? No, typically inspiration and hard work comes when you are in a good mood, thinking clearly and having a can-do attitude.
